Flames of War - Open Fire - German Grenadiers Pt.3

Hi All,

The first command group is completed! I don't know if I'm more impressed with the finished minis or my new found photography skills, Both look great IMHO.

After some base testing I competed the actual base. Though, TBH there was an issue with this & the flock didn't come out as planned. Overall I happy with the results & look forward to painting more.

Flames of War - Open Fire - German Grenadiers Pt.2

Hi All,

I've got the three minis for my first command group completed. They've taken some time, as I've had to get used to the new painting style, colours (bought a few new VMC's recently) & developing my own style of this technique. For example, I wasn't happy with the use of metallic paint, for me it looked out of place & too metallic. Most the WWII pics I've seen & more importantly the image in my mind, is of blued steel. A metal which looks black with very little sparkly metal seen. My solution to this has been to develop a non-metalic metal (NMM) colour to replicate this. I also feel that NMM suits the overall painting style well. Below are plenty of pics for you to see for yourself, including the previously painted mini, re-painting with NMM.

Next step is to base these guys. I plan to use Vallejo Brown Earth, which is an earth coloured textured paste. Ive not used it before, so I will do some testing first. I also plan to use my flockbox to add some static grass & tufts.

Flames of War - Open Fire - German Grenadiers

Hi All,

This weekend I put aside some 'me time' to paint my first infantryman from the new Open Fire box set. Ive been doing a lot of research, buying painting guides & mulling over how I would approach painting these minis. Initially I thought I would follow the guide I used in my last post. Then I thought that I would use a more simple/fast process, as seen in the new Colours of War book. But then I discovered Ruben Torregrosa (aka "HeresyBrush)'s work, which really inspired me to try for myself, our styles are very similar, but Ruben primarily uses a layering style. His magazine Painting War: WWII German Army in Campaign is fantastic. If you want a taster of his work, along with a detailed guide (which I used) to paint the mini pictured below visit this Link!

Once I get some more completed & based I will post some more. Ive also been working on the tanks, so I will also post pics of these.
